Doctor: What do i have here, the physical symptoms don't match any one virus I've seen before

Doctor:Whats happening to me , i did everything right. The wound should of been sterilised properly.

Reporter: In this hospital behind me traces of a new and deadly virus have been found. The national                    health association is advising everyone to stay at home  at this point in time.

It is proposed that the film's duration will be between 2 minutes to 2 minutes and 30 seconds. The film was shot at a friends house where there was a lot of outdoor terrain, good for a thriller film where the bush and shadows created an unknown and mysterious atmosphere. It was perfect because there was an unsealed driveway where our supposed 'antagonist' was seen walking as if in a grungy house somewhere in an isolated location. 

The film includes the following thriller conventions, a knife was used as a weapon in order to strike fear and alert the audience that some type of danger was about to arise. This heightened heart rates creating a high tense situation. We utilised the conventions of iconography by using blood and weapons. Blood was shown in our hand-to-hand combat scene as our villain slashes our ‘hero’s’ flesh. We did this to try and enforce the amount of danger that our characters were really in. Since our characters are both young it is as if they are teen spys on the run, this can grab the attention of our target audience as they almost wish they were the ones fighting a life of crime. 

We decided to base our film off of the idea of a Jason Bourne type of film. After watching opening scenes from many spy/action films we decided to take different elements from a range of sources to create our idea of an ‘intense’ chase scene, we looked at the video game Outlast where the character is running away and having to hide behind objects and get away from the people hunting him.

This is an example of a high intensity chase scene where the character is having to literally fend for his life. The fast paced orchestral music in the background makes the situation worse, creating anticipation for what is about to happen next.

As we progressed through the year with our idea and story we had an implication as one of our team members left school. With that we had to go to our back-up plan which was to essentially shorten the film as the time for filming was pushed because we weren't able to complete what we were supposed to in the holidays. One of our main issues apart from time restraints was the actors and mobility of where we could go to film. We wanted to show a family type atmosphere where the virus gets spread but due to the shortage of actors/talent we have scratched that idea and our now doing a lengthened version of our title sequence where you will see short clips from the film almost acting as a trailer and the credits will play over the top.

We used the film called Contagion as a source of inspiration. Throughout the trailer we see short clips of the movie while also playing credits and rolling out the plot-line of the film.

 

We have looked at the film Contagion's trailer and that is the type of effect we want to go for where the credits play over the top of the film. We see snippets of the movie while also leading up to the plot/story-line, it shows us what is going to happen without revealing too much. 

Our group had a minor set back as one of our team members has decided to leave school, due to this we have had to re-think our idea and shorten the original plot. Now instead of seeing the doctor go around infecting her family it will just be contained where you will see the infected wound but it will be covered up. It will then transition to a news reporter outside the North Shore Hospital who will be speaking about the rapid spread of the virus and how it has affected the general public. We have gained some extra help from people from other teams and Luci has kindly offered to help with our audio management. 

Our film has three characters:

Character#1- Lewis 

Lewis is the young man who has been infected with the virus, he is the first case in New Zealand but no one knows about it because of how well the doctor has kept it a secret. Due to the lack if education about the virus, no cure has been made which is why he is shown strapped to a bed in an unknown location (a hidden hideaway) 

Character#2- Doc 

The Doc is a young lady in her what seem to be mid 20's early 30's her goal is to find the cure to this virus then expose it to the world but the struggle to find the cure is what is keeping her from her moment in the spotlight. Without the antidote she is just some crazed scientist fathoming over a mythical disease that has never been heard of and has no cure. 

Character#3- Keith Bailey (news reporter)

The news reporter will be seen speaking live from outside the North Shore Hospital where the virus has now infected millions after the doctor decided to try and hide the fleshy wound given to her by the already infected young man. This will give a bit more detail to the film as this is when it will say the virus symptoms and whether they have found the so longed for 'cure'.  

Brainstorm 

Location

Our location is at church in the double classroom at the bottom of the building. It is a wide open room with long black curtains as backdrops and wide space for us to place a desk and a bed.

We will hang a piece of string across the top banisters in order to create a washing line where we will hang a long white sheet over it in order to make our 'curtain' effect.

The brightness/lighting of the room didn't matter too much as we would be happy filming in night or day time. The double doors will most likely be closed during the filming process to block out sounds and other noises that may be heard through the boom pole.

The desk will be placed in the corner where you will see the blackboard in the background. This will have chalk writing all over it as if a crazy scientist has been writing on it all day. Signs and symbols will be used as iconography in order to represent the scientific and almost mental side of the film.

Tarps will be placed on the floor to make the whole atmosphere look more grungy and distasteful as if our doctor/scientist is doing this in secret/illegally.

 

Due to implications with the location we have no had to change once again where we will be filming. Instead of the double classroom we will be filming in the salvation room which has now been converted into a filming studio. This was our last option in terms of where we could film as the verisimilitude of the film needs to be realistic. It will be a smaller space to work with but the lighting will be ideal as it will be dimly light with little to no background noise. For our curtain we will stick with the same concept in terms of just hanging a piece of ribbon across the ceiling and putting a white sheet over it. This will also set the scene of a low budget, secretive underground workshop.

Rampage this name is meant to indicate one thing alone. The film is a medical thriller that focuses on the dangers do you virus that is spreading across  The world with the potential to wipe out humanity. No one on earth has faced a threat this big before, and the virus always seems to become stronger. The definition of rampant is flourishing or spreading insects especially when it is something unwelcome. So the name rampant perfectly sums up the situation of the antagonised virus . 

The term rampage has a strong net negative connotation and links to the idea that what ever is rampant must be removed urgently with extreme prejudice. My target audience might is a slightly older group generally 15+ As there are some more mature concepts especially as it is a thriller concepts such as deaths are prevalent along with story as well as well as mental illness search is psychosis  Playing out in the story line due to the virus. The audience will be targeted through web 2.0 by utilising social media platforms to create awareness of our film opening. Sites like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube will be key in distribute seeing to the correct groups the audience. Groups like the i GEN will be keyed to the Promotion of our opening.

Are characters trying to serial typical crazy scientist style that can be seen as a common convention in countless films that are not just limited as to the thriller genre. The inspiration for the character was taken from Iron Man for three Aldridge Killian, a character who seems unstable and eventually succumb to his own experimentation. 

 We are planning to film in the school science lab to utilise the equipment to create  The aesthetics I have a medical thriller. Do use of the science gear utilises the common convention of medical feels as a world are considered places where people need to be serious and the virus situation makes a clear show of the medical labs importance as time runs out.

The plot my clip utilize the world any virus being identified by our main characters as an eccentric scientist. Suspense is built when he contracts the deadly virus and is running out of time as he races against the clock to find a cure to save everyone. This uses the convention of an eminent danger approaching with limited time.

A key use of props is vital to a medical thriller as a proper lab set up contains things such as medical equipment that creates an underlying  Atmosphere of the film. The connotation of scientific equipment  Is commonly used in the case of a virus that threatens the survival of the human species. 

We will be filming  at our school to utilise  the science lab as a key setting for the story as to use the convention of a professional atmosphere.Also we will be shooting at a home as to create a place for our main character to properly express himself in an environment that reflects his way of thinking and character.We will also be shooting in front of a hospital in a news report style piece. A common convention in medical thrillers that inform the audience of the information from the public's perspective while filling in any gaps in the story.

Our opening sequence is based in a world where a new and dangerous virus appears, with the potential to wipe out the human race and throe the  world into chaos like never before. The clip opens up with a rather extrinsic doctor who is observing the new virus and attempting to cure a patient of it. The patient is showing signs of extreme aggression and a clear deterioration of his body is taking place accelerating  at an alarming rate. During the infected individual causing a wound on his hand. He  attempts to sterilise his own wound and not alert any of his fellow staff to his situation believing that he will be OK as he tended to it immediately. He returns home after his shift to carry on his study into the cure  of the virus. After being at home for a time he starts to experience symptoms of the virus as he realises that he is infected with the virus. He begins to experience a mental and physical break down as he battles against time to save himself and all other infected with the virus.

Victim :Mr. Mortem

Mortem is Latin for death alluding to the way he spreads death to the main characters Mr. Mortem is destine to die and to kill though around him.

Reporter: Mrs. Vigilet

Vigilet means to alert which connects to her job as a reporter telling the public about the virus outbreak. She representing  everyone in her field (of reporting) as they let the world know the risk of the virus so that everyone can prepare themselves.

Doctor:Mr.Variables

The doctors last name is Latin for variable which represents how he is the deciding factor between the end or property of the human race, their variable factor.

Treatment: The criminal

his film will be a minimum of 1 minute to a maximum of 2 minutes as required of by AS media. As for location we will utilise the outdoors mainly in New Zealand being the focus. The story takes place in a case style so the out doors approach will allow for effective long distance movement without the problems of confinement.

Conventions being a key part of thrillers are also utilised through :

• Weapons signifying the high stakes the danger the characters face building suspense.
• Ruff clothes to show the already worn down characters battling it out for survival ( distances characters from comfort as a whole.
• the fall into night links to the huge popular convention of darkness ( being unaware of the dangers around you), this also represents a fall into a caose of sorts.
• Injuries will add to the suspense as the audience questions how long the characters have left (how far can they get before scumming to their injuries).
• Blood is also a good convention to raise suspense as blood loss is dangerous and the colour red often has a connotation of negativity/emergency.
• Money will be used to show what is to gain from the situation.

A good example of the style of film we used is the Jason Bourn films, we drew concepts and ideas from the film to produce our clip.

Ideology: the film focuses on the dangerous high stakes situation that stands in the way of the main character who is in possession of a large quantity of money.

The mood and tone of the film is high tension, high suspense action, their is a clear link between the fear of being caught by the antagonises and the idea of running from death its self. the mood is dark with death looming and the tone expresses a feeling of heaviness. this connects to the viewer as the story can be treated as an allegory for death and life.

Themes of death fear and danger are prevalent supported by a wealth of subtle themes such as running from something bigger than yourself as though how intend to take what he has taken chase him.another theme is theft, the idea of taking what you want and then dealing with the consequences.

Mise en scene is covered through the choice to shoot later into the day creating darker lighting setting the aforementioned lighting. the location of open fields also ironically creates the feeling of isolation as their is a limited amount of character interactions , anything can happen an not many people would know.

Sound will be utilised to set the tone and mood by creating a heavy atmosphere and building as moments of action take place.

Audio operations 

In this protect, the main theme that is guiding and informing me on the type of audio that is needed is a combination of loud and quite sounds that create contrast as weapons such as guns grab audience attention the protagonists must go unnoticed in order to hide their position. the sound will be carefully alternated between the communication and weapons firing. non-dietetic music will be used to build up suspense with a high energy, high tempo song leading up to the firing. The convention of building tension using things such as whispering to express the circumstantial danger (life or death) of the situation.

Lingering Shots:

• Increase suspense by focusing on a character longer than expected, pauses bvvuild tension as the audience begins to worry about what happens next (they will become uncomfortable ).
• Building anticipation (extra second ).

Fast cuts:

• Catches the audience off guard.
• Creates a feeling of panic for the audience as they figure out what going on.
• Building up to, fast cuts are necessary in order to utilise the full effect of the suspense and then the apex of the story/situation.
• The audience becomes more aware of their senses.

Music/sound:

• The sound track must have a build up to create suspense.
• Drawn out music/sounds that have no melody will create a high tension atmosphere.

Close ups:

• Allows the audience to empathise with the character by seeing their reaction (on their faces and body language ).
• Limited information can be seen at a time creating a combination of suspense and tension as the audience must watch seeing every detail. (this works if you want the audience to draw their own conclusion). Do not rely on this technique to much.

Be aware of negative space:

• Create a  balance between location and characters, giving context to the situation that happens in the clip.
• Symbolism in the atmosphere or even foreshadowing.
• Control over space  can  create a sense of claustrophobia or minimise the character through perspective.

Action thriller

Camera angles:

High angles minimise characters making them seem weaker,inferior,and set to fail. On the the other hand low angles enlarge a characters size making them seem powerful and triumphant (confident).

Time distortion:

Erratic speeding up and slowing down of time can create a sense of unease as the viewer feels a loss of control trapped in the story. Suspense is built in pauses and tension is built characters are forced into dangerous situations
